I was so excited to try all the seafood when visiting Boston. As someone not growing up on the coast, good fish and seafood are hard to fine. So, my goal was to try all the iconic Bostonian dishes. After reading this foodie guide, you will know what to eat in Boston and where to find it!
Clam Chowder
Clam Chowder or as the locals say “chowdah,” is made out of clams, onions, milk or cream and potatoes and thickened with oyster crackers. There are different types of chowder, the ones in Boston are usually white chowders – due to the added milk. You can find chowder in almost any restaurant in Boston. I tried chowder at family-owned James Hook & Co. right at the waterfront which tasted like heaven! Be sure to also try a crab cake there!
Lobster Roll
My favorite: lobster roll! Okay, as an European I was a bit unsure about eating lobster in a bun, but let me tell you it’s so good. Picture buttered roll with pink lobster meat and warm melted butter or mayo. I tried the lobster roll with cold mayo at Boston Chowda Co. in famous Quincy Market and it was divine! There are also other stands in Quincy Market where you can try it (or other delicious seafood). If you are in Quincy Market try to get a seat at the top level!
Oysters
Since I usually travel alone, I never dared to try oysters. Ordering a whole bucket of oysters in Bretagne, France, if you only going to eat one? And guess what, it was the right decision! I went on a foodie tour in Boston and was so happy that I finally was in a group to try them and buy a dozen of them when only eating one. I actually had four with and without chili – I really tried to like them. However, if you are a big fan of oysters, try them at Union Oster House, America’s oldest restaurant. Do take a look around, it’s a huge restaurant and full of history!
Cannoli
The North End is unofficially Boston’s Little Italy. If you are going to Boston, you will have to try the cannoli. There has been some competition or rather dispute where to get the best cannoli: Mike’s or Modern? Almost any take on cannoli is a good bet in the North End, that is for sure. Luckily, I did the seafood tour the day before and my guide recommended Modern’s cannoli, Mike’s being more tour. Whatever you decide to go with, be sure to grab one!
If you like seafood, you will definitely enjoy your stay in Boston!
